(but without the annoying sound effects)
Instrumental

Change of direction
due to difficulties concerning filming and filming arrangements , we have decided to make a more effects based video rather than a narrative piece. It was difficult for us to organize filming outside of college time due to the distance apart we lived from each other and the fact that many of us were busy for much of the time given, making it difficult for all of us to film at any date outside of college. as a result of this, we could only film material individually, on our own or together in college. this has obviously left us with limiting footage. to overcome this we have decided to use all the footage and edit it together to still create an interesting and exciting music video.

We will be using certain effects in our videos for example slow motion effects. here is a video of a balloon exploding in slow motion:

Part One
Explain briefly how the work came about and what the tasks were.
(Talk about learning more techniques for final Cut, analysing some real music videos and looking at student examples, talk from promo director, music range of choices, etc)
Which band/artist did your group choose and why?
We chose “This is the law” by Version Big-fi. This is a mostly instrumental track which could go well with either an abstract video or one with a story. There are some sampled vocals that are repeated. There are good instrument solos and a strong rhythm.
How did you ‘pitch’ for them?
(summarise briefly)
Our initial planning ideas:
We first thought of a man walking around and stopping people from breaking the law and then eventually ending up at a party where lots of random people danced to the ending part of the song. We then decided this was too basic and had been done many times before. To slightly alter this idea we thought the party could take place in a church and the main guy is dressed as a vicar. This seemed better because it was more unexpected but still relevant.
Where did you get your ideas from? Cite actual examples as shown on your blog!
We took influences from various different genres of music video. One example is the video for justice’s ‘stress’, where a group of rude boys mission about being rude boys. This is not the most original ideo idea but when done well, with the right music it can be quite effective. A similar video from a completely different genre is the video for tenor saw’s ring the alarm
What tasks had to be done in the research and planning phase? How were these handled and what could have been done to improve them?
(talk about storyboarding, animatic, organising places, props, equipment, people)
How did the group come to decisions about approaches to the tasks to be completed? (what range of options did you consider and why did you opt for the choices you made?)
What roles did the various people in the group take on? Concentrate particularly on your role in the various activities.
Talk about any test footage you shot. What did you learn from doing these tests and from the animatic?
Write about the shoot. What went well/badly? what could you have done differently?
Consider your early editing and how you reached the rough cut stage. Outline this process and discuss decision-making you undertook.
What does the group feel about the rough cut? What feedback have you had from director/ other students etc? what still needs to be done?weve compiled a rough cut of all our footage while being very incomplete we hope to recover this by filming on friday and the week before half term in order to regain where we should be, we will go to linton a village outside cambridge to film on location the church and the the vicar we may also include the car footage if we have accesss to it all in all we should have the majority of our footage by the end of next week
Version Big-fi
We found a video for another Version Big-Fi song (you are not alone)
The editing is very abstract and dreamy
similar techniques could work well for our video

video ideas/inspiration
if we are allowed we may also include some footage we could not film such as riots
or slow motion that we could not achieve with the college equipment
also it is worth noting the conventions of dub/reggae music videos, they tend to be mainly the artist(s) strolling around they're town or just footage of said town.so we came up with the idea of following a single character to a location where there is live music playing our focus song.it would start off quite calm in transit to the location and when at the location there would be a party/rave like atosphere wit close ups abstract filming with a variety of shot in which to express the rythm and the loight hearted nature of the song

Band Biography
Hailing from Reading in the UK, Version Big-Fi sound nothing like anything the city has ever produced. Putting classic songwriting aside, this twosome bring wired-up punk energy, super heavy reggae grooves and booming dub echoes to the forefront, as well as taking in influences as diverse and eclectic as King Tubby, The Clash, Massive Attack, Dreadzone, Joe Gibbs, Suicide, Scientist, Dead 60s, On-U Sound, Death In Vegas, The Specials, John Barry & Pop Will Eat Itself they have a foot firmly implanted in the 21st Century taking Dub forwards and upwards.
Version Big-Fi have always been determined to stay totally separate from the insular music scene around them. "We want to make tea," says bassist Papa Sparks. "Our songs should be sung at every social gathering in the country. We're not interested in sloganeering, posturing or coffee in the conventional sense."
Version Big-Fi - Tone (beats/dubs) and Papa Sparks (bass/samples) - have been honing their radical assault since late 2006. Previously releasing 3 singles in the UK under the Dubtronic label, the bands first full-length studio album Everything But was produced at Big-Fi Studios in Reading.
2008 has already seen Version Big-Fi nominated for "Best Dub Recording Or Album" at the 2008 Reggae Academy Awards held in Febuary at the National Indoor Sports Centre, Kingston, Jamaica.
The Band are currently putting the finishing touches to their new album to be released in October of this year .
"They're very much a 21th Century act, and not just because of the fact that Version Big-Fi was born in 2006. The progressive UK based DUB collective is determined to do their part in taking Reggae Music into this century and they're doing it, too!
All kinds of digital technologies and possibilities are used to express their works of DUB Art, everything in the Punky Reggae tradition that so many in the UK have been influenced by.
Pure energy, pure niceness!"

Video Analysis - Simian Mobile Disco
This video was directed by Romain Gavras (who also directed 'A cross the universe' and 'Stress' for Justice) for Simian Mobile Disco's song 'I believe'. The video features an east-European-looking farming family. much of the video seems to parody typical hip-hop music video conventions. For example the shots of one of an adolescent and his friends sitting on an old beat-up car. I really like the stylization of this video and the cinematography used. Much of the cinematography used is conventional to documentaries. it creates an interesting and quirky atmosphere.

Reply from the band when we asked for information:
Hi Group 33,
for example when was it started?
The band started recording in 2006 although we've been doing stuff individually for a few years
-------------------
what was your first song?
The first release was "Top Of The World" (virtual single) in June 07
---------------------
what influenced you into this genre of music?
Many, many things .. although the band is primarily influenced by 70's Dub/Reggae (King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Scientist) it also takes in Breaks, Dubstep, Indie, Punk 60's film soundtracks and Dancehall ...
---------------------
where did you get the sample of 'this is the law'?
an old DJ/Skinhead Reggae single by Andy Capp called "The Law" I think it was released around 1969 on Trojan
You can hear it here:
